From the Ashes and the Snow

A Story of Survival, Love, Loss, and Hope. A memoir by Mohamed Zerouali Omari.

The book in one paragraph

In 1993, a nineteen-year-old leaves Casablanca with two suitcases, his father’s blessing, and a dream of Wall Street. From the Ashes and the Snow follows him across seventeen years in America: the long climb in New York, a September morning that turned the sky to ash, a winter night when a daughter was born, and the slow collapse of the life he had built. Told the way a trader reads the world, one candlestick chart per chapter, from despair to hope, it is a memoir of survival, love, loss, and faith, and it ends with a father’s letter to his child.

In one line

“The boy who left his father to build a life in America became the father who had to leave his daughter.”

Author biography — long

Mohamed Zerouali Omari was born in Casablanca in 1974, in a bear market. In August 1993, at nineteen, he crossed the Atlantic alone with two suitcases, his father’s blessing, and a dream of Wall Street.

He studied finance at Baruch College, City University of New York, and worked his way into the world he had imagined since childhood: as an equity trader on Wall Street, then in audit and advisory at KPMG in New York. On September 11, 2001, he was on the street below the North Tower. He survived, and he rebuilt.

He returned to Morocco in 2010, and his career in finance continued at the Casablanca Stock Exchange. Today he is the General Manager of a company that equips leading medical institutions in Morocco and Africa, from operating rooms to imaging suites. American and Moroccan, he lives in Casablanca. From the Ashes and the Snow is his first book.
